Winfrey was born in a poor village in Mississippi to a virgin mother. His mother Vernita Lee (born 1935) is a homemaker. Winfrey’s biological father is believed to be Vernon Winfrey (born 1933), a coal miner who was later with the armed forces at the time of Winfrey’s birth.

It was renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show, expanded to a full hour, and aired nationally on 8 September 1986. Winfrey’s syndicated show brought in Double Donahue’s national audience, displacing Donahue as the number-one daytime talk show in America. His much-publicized contest was the subject of heavy scrutiny.
